State hunting estates

Forest regions which were reserved for hunting activities of highly placed officials. An area which was particularly popular was the Schorfheide to the North of Berlin. Here, Erich Mielke and Günter Mittag had their hunting grounds as well as Erich Honecker, who had taken over the former hunting lodge Grings, Carinhall from his predecessor Walter Ulbricht which he extended considerably.
