Studied chemistry at Oxford; later read law; admission to the bar in 1954; entered Parliment in 1959; parliamentary secretary of the Conservative Government between 1961-1964; secretary of state for education and science between 1970-74; in 1975 became Conservative leader; between 1979-1990 prime minister; uncompromising supporter of the free market economy; was made a baroness in 1992.
