Heldenstadt Leipzig
With the Monday demonstrations which originated in the weekly prayers for peace, and which were attended by up to two hundred thousand demonstrators, Leipzig became the "motor" of the peaceful revolution in the GDR. In respect and to honour this courageous behaviour of the population, the term "Hero's City of Leipzig" was formed in the months of the changeover and afterwards (in imitation of the Soviet creation of terms).
