Gruppe der 20 (Group of 20)

On 8th October 1989, a group of twenty citizens of Dresden achieved the enforcement of a first offer of dialogue by the SED. After five days of sometimes violent disputes between demonstrators and the police, thousands of demonstrators were trapped on the Prager Straße on 8th October. These included the chaplains Frank Richter and Andreas Leuschner, who were able to establish contact with the head of the police force and to hold talks. Twenty of the people trapped were appointed spontaneously and instructed to negotiate on the following day with the State power about their political demands.
