Grammar school; 1945 Free German Trade Union Federation (FDGB); editor of the newspaper "Berlin Zeitung"; 1946 Socialist Unity Party (SED), Free German Youth (FDJ); chief editor of the newspaper "Junge Welt"; Komsomol College in Moscow; secretary of the Central Council of the FDJ; employee of the Central Committee (Zentralkomitee) of the SED; chief editor of the "Berlin Zeitung"; member of the SED county headquarters in Berlin; secretary of state for German affairs (later for West German affairs); member of the Central Committee of the SED; chief editor of the "Neues Deutschland"; member of the Politburo, secretary of the Central Committee of the SED, responsible for agitation and propaganda; member of the People's Chamber (Volkskammer); relieved of functions as member of the Politburo and secretary of the Central Committee of the SED on 18th Oct. 1989, expulsion from the SED-PDS on 20th Nov. 1990, retired.
